Justice for Jose

Protecting children with rare conditions from criminalization and discrimination in American schools.

Jose's Story

Jose is a 10-year-old child with an ultra-rare genetic disorder, a kind heart, and a brilliant mind. After moving to the U.S. with his family seeking medical care, he thrived in school—until changes in leadership and a lack of understanding about his condition led to escalating discipline, repeated suspensions, and now, an effort to remove him entirely through due process and juvenile court referrals.

This is not just about Jose. It’s about every vulnerable child with a rare condition who risks being labeled, excluded, and criminalized instead of supported.

The Legal Fight

Led by nationally known civil rights attorney Bobby DiCello, Jose's family is preparing a major federal lawsuit alleging violations of disability rights, educational access, due process, and equal protection. The case highlights how the U.S. public school system is failing its most vulnerable children—and how a rare medical condition is being turned into a reason for criminalization.
